How to make an org chart
An organisation chart shows who reports to whom. It helps new starters find their way around, makes gaps and overlaps visible and gives planning discussions something concrete to look at.
Start with the top and work down
Put the head of the organisation at the top, add one row per level of management, and group each team under its lead. Keep boxes the same size so the chart looks even.
Build it in NodeFlow
- Open the editor, choose Flowchart and pick the "Org chart" template.
- Double-click a box to rename it to a role or a name.
- Duplicate a box with Ctrl+D, then drag from its dots to connect it to its manager.
- Select several boxes and use align and distribute to even out the rows.
Tips for a chart people keep using
- Show roles first and names second, so the chart survives people changing jobs.
- Use colour sparingly, for example one colour per department.
- Mark dotted-line relationships with dashed connectors.
- Keep the saved copy in your account and share a read-only link instead of emailing files.
