How to make an org chart from a spreadsheet or CSV

If your people list already lives in a spreadsheet, drawing the chart by hand is wasted effort. Give NodeFlow the list and it builds the boxes, the reporting lines and the layout for you.

Get your list ready

You need one row per person with at least two columns: the person's name and who they report to. A title column is optional and appears as a second line in each box. An id column is also supported, which helps when two people share a name.

  • name, manager (and optionally title or id) are the column names NodeFlow looks for.
  • The top person has an empty manager.
  • Without a header row, the first column is read as the name and the second as the manager.

Paste or load it

  • Open the editor and choose File, Build from text or CSV.
  • Pick "Org chart from a table".
  • Paste rows copied from your spreadsheet, or choose a CSV file. Tab, comma and semicolon separators all work.
  • Check the preview line, which shows how many boxes and connections will be made and warns about anything odd.

What the warnings mean

  • A manager who is not in the list: that person is placed at the top.
  • Someone listed as their own manager.
  • The same name appearing twice: only the first row is used.

Tidy and share

The chart opens in a new tab, arranged as a tree. Switch the layout to left to right if you prefer, or drag boxes to adjust. Then export it as PNG, SVG or PDF, or save it to your account and share a read-only link.
